Genevieve Grieves (Worimi Nation / Australia)
b. 1976, Sydney; lives Sydney
Picturing the old people (Warriors, Children, Mourning, Desire, Family), 2005

Genevieve Grieves, a talented documentary filmmaker, video and sound artist, and descendant of the Worimi Nation of the mid north coast of New South Wales, worked with many thousands of images of Kooris held in the State Library of Victoria’s photographic archive during her time as manager of the Oral History unit of the Koori Heritage Trust (2001-2005). A later Creative Fellowship with the library brought the opportunity to synthesize Picturing the Old People as a gesture of repatriation. The artist carefully choreographs and directs each tiny movement of the sixteen Koori performers – all amateurs invited from the community – with whom she builds these sequences. A layered audio track of AM radio, quiet song, domestic piano-harpsichord, children’s chatter, and the swish of native grasses transport the viewer further into an immersive and sensory dialogue.
