San Jose Museum of Art
May 10 – August 31, 2008

Invented in the early 19th century, metronomes are used to establish a steady tempo, largely for musical compositions. In this work, electronically rigged metronomes activate in the voices of hypnotists to lull the listener into a trance. By combining the steady tempo with the voices of hypnotists, DeMarinis seems to comment upon the effects of prolonged exposure to measured time. Long interested in inventions, DeMarinis is fascinated with the human relationship to technology, and was one of the first artists to use the personal computer as an art-making tool.
