3rd 01SJ Biennial September 2010

A global festival of art on the edge

Mercury News: Pizzaro getting out 411 on 01SJ, a digital art festival in June

In just about a month, the digital art festival known as 01SJ will be returning to downtown San Jose. And I expect the return of a familiar question from the 2006 event, “What the heck is this?”

At a preview event held at real estate firm Orchard Commercial’s North First Street digs Friday, a few people took a stab at answering.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said it was “at the intersection of art and technology,” which I think is somewhere near Market and San Fernando. Festival executive director Kersti Bronk says it’s a way to put Silicon Valley ahead of the next wave of artistic expression.

My favorite line, though, came from Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who said 01SJ covers everything “from geek to chic.”

If you want to get a taste of what the June 4-8 festival will be like, the artists of one of the exhibitions, “Superlight,” will be at a free event at the San Jose Museum of Art on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. And you can preview some of the art for yourself at www.01sj.org

WELCOME BACK: Among those mingling at the 01SJ preview was Peter Giles, who retired in 2005 as the CEO of the Tech Museum of Innovation and later took a job leading an astronomy center in Hawaii.

Giles is now employed by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, working on “corporate partnerships.” With another familiar face at City Hall, it must feel like a class reunion there some days.
