Digital technologies impact all forms of creative expression, including the visual arts, performing arts, and moving image. Just as the introduction of the Portapak video camera created a new and exciting means of “filmmaking,” video game engines and desktop computers now allow creators to make films known as machinima on their desktops using these new tools to create a convincing virtual world. Douglas Gayeton’s Molotov Alva and His Search for the Creator is a machinima documentary made entirely in the virtual world of Second Life about a character, who leaves his “Straightworld” life behind and in ten video dispatches from his new second life, encounters everything from Furries to Cyberpunks to Neo-Luddites to Sex Slaves to the King of the Hobos, Orhalla Zander, who becomes Molotov’s guide – and ours – as he searches for the creator of this brave new world. Ultimately, Molotov Alva and His Search for the Creator is a superlight philosophical treatise on our place in a hybrid universe.
